We recognize that there is well established, bountiful fly tying content online.

We set out to build the most powerful digital fly tying tool. Not a retailer. Not a forum. Not a social platform. The definitive archive and discovery engine for fly patterns — the connective tissue between all of them.

I was introduced to fly fishing as a young boy by my father, who dragged me along to local Trout Unlimited events. The interest grew as I got older — fishing Wisconsin's Driftless area, with trips out West sprinkled in. In 2013 I moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, and it really took hold, with gold medal water in every direction. I started fly tying in 2019, and by 2020 I was hooked. The idea for ViseVault had been rattling around in my head for a while. Then in 2025, my son was born — and like most new dads, I found myself spending a lot less time on the water.

I filled some of that nap time at the vise. And the more time I spent tying, the deeper I went — into pattern history, custom boxes, and discovering flies I'd never heard of. My tying desk became a mess of sticky notes. I was making weekly trips to the fly shop just to track down materials for whatever rabbit hole I'd fallen down.

There had to be a better way, so I set out to build one. I'm a very average fly tyer with a great idea.

ViseVault was created for fly tyers by fly tyers. We are not here to sell you materials or flies. We are here to organize, preserve, and unlock the knowledge that fly tying has accumulated over generations — and put it in your pocket.

ViseVault keeps your tying organized, teaches as you go, and opens up new possibilities — search by the materials you already have and discover what you can tie right now.

Every pattern includes a complete recipe, step-by-step instructions, a material list, and — where possible — attribution to the original designer. We've made every effort to honor original recipes, because the history behind a pattern is part of its value. At the same time, materials are easily substituted, and we never want that to limit you. ViseVault isn't here to constrain your creativity. It's here to set it loose.

Our mission.

To foster growth, discovery, and enjoyment in fly tying and fly fishing.

We also believe local fly shops are the lifeblood of this community. They bring tyers and anglers together, pass down generations of knowledge, introduce newcomers to the sport, and give back through conservation and philanthropy. ViseVault is built to send people back to those shops — not big box retailers.

What the name means.

Vise Where every fly begins. If you tie, you already know the vise. It's the heart of the craft.
Vault Because these patterns are worth keeping. A place to store, protect, and organize generations of fly tying knowledge so nothing gets lost.

From the Vise to the Vault.

What we believe.

ViseVault is built and maintained by ViseVault LLC, a Colorado company. The app is coming soon to iOS. (Android will follow.)
